Vehicle Noise Insulation: Nonwoven Acoustic Absorbers in Cars

A quieter ride for a more comfortable journey: targeted acoustic insulation is becoming increasingly important in vehicle manufacturing, particularly as acoustic requirements evolve with the shift towards electric vehicles. With the combustion engine no longer the dominant source of noise, sounds such as road noise, wind noise, and drivetrain noise become more noticeable. Lightweight acoustic absorbers made from nonwoven can help improve the acoustic comfort inside the cabin. The same principle extends beyond the automotive sector to include rail and aviation.

Noise Reduction in the Vehicle Interior: What Can Acoustic Absorbers achieve?

Reducing noise inside a vehicle requires materials that combine acoustic effectiveness with the demands of modern vehicle design. Acoustic absorbers help reduce interior noise by absorbing noise energy.

Nonwoven fabrics are well suited to this purpose as they are lightweight and can be adapted to different components and geometries. This is particularly important where installation space is limited or where several functions, such as acoustic and thermal insulation, need to be combined in a single component.

Which are the requirements towards acoustic absorbers in EVs?

In electric vehicles, achieving the right balance between weight, installation space and acoustic performance is key. finexus® by Sandler combines acoustic effectiveness and thermal insulation in a single 100% Polyester (PET) mono-material. This allows several functions to be integrated into one component without the need for additional backing material or binders finexus® applications can be used in underbody covers, wheelhouse liners, headliners, or trunk liners. Thanks to its dimensional stability, finexus® is suitable also for frunk applications and other areas where noise absorption, low weight, and a flexible integration are required.

The nonwoven structure absorbs sound energy, helping to optimize the acoustics of a vehicle's interior. Please find more information on our fast forward fabric here.

    What makes finexus® acoustically effective?

The acoustic effectiveness of finexus® is based on its specific structure. As sound waves pass through the material, frictional and flow effects convert part of the acoustic energy into heat. The material thus becomes an acoustic absorber, helping to reduce unwanted noise and sound reflections.

The choice of material depends on factors such as frequency range, installation conditions, available space, and other technical requirements.
