Nonwovens and fleece: The difference that makes the difference

In English, there is a clear distinction between "nonwoven fabric" and "fleece". Whereas in German, the two types of fabric are often confused due to a shared pronunciation. This article therefore deals with the differences between fleece and nonwoven fabric. 

Nonwoven and fleece - two terms that describe fundamentally different materials. While both fabrics are used in the apparel industry and beyond, it is important to understand the differences. Nonwovens are textile fabrics consisting of disordered fibers that are bonded by mechanical, thermal or chemical processes. They can be used in a variety of ways, for example in filtration technology, as insulating materials or as backing materials. Fleece, on the other hand, is a woven fabric that is characterized by its soft, fluffy structure and is particularly popular in outdoor and sportswear. Fleece offers excellent thermal properties and is also easy to care for. It is therefore ideal for clothing that needs to offer both comfort and functionality. Both materials have their own specific advantages and areas of use that need to be considered. 

Nonwoven and fleece - the comparison

The main difference between nonwovens and fleece lies in the material composition and the manufacturing process. Nonwovens consist of fibers that are bonded together using processes such as meltblown, needlepunch, spunlace, thermofusion and thermal bonding, without the need for a weaving or knitting process. Sandler also applies these processes. Nonwovens can be made from a wide variety of fiber types, including polyester, polypropylene, viscose and a variety of renewable fibers. In contrast, fleece is usually manufactured from polyester and produced by weaving and then roughening the surface. In general, the structure of nonwoven fabrics is flatter and more uniform than that of fleece.

    Focus on nonwovens

    There are many different types of nonwoven fabrics, each characterized by a number of advantageous properties. Voluminous nonwovens offer good thermal and sound insulation. Other nonwoven fabrics absorb moisture well, or release it again quickly, depending on the requirements of the end application. At the same time, nonwovens allow excellent air circulation. This large variety of properties, from insulation, to breathability, to moisture regulation, means nonwoven fabrics offer a versatile and functional range of materials for many areas of use.

     

    Focus on fleece

    The roughening of the surface creates small air pockets that provide excellent thermal insulation in fleece fabric. Fleece is particularly soft and offers a high level of wearing comfort. Fleece is also easy to care for and dries quickly but should be washed at low temperatures to avoid damaging the structure. These properties make fleece ideal for everyday use and outdoor activities.

    Innovations and future trends

    The textile industry is constantly evolving and both nonwovens and fleece are benefiting from these developments. Research is focusing on the development of biodegradable and more environmentally friendly materials. Progress in manufacturing technology is leading to even better properties and a more sustainable production. The trend is towards multifunctional materials that offer both comfort and sustainability. These innovations and trends show that the future of the textile industry is promising and will continue to offer new opportunities.
